Learning Target: Students will be able to create research questions for driving their learning and to explain why it is important to do so.
Building Research Skills: Questioning
- What questions would you expect a video titled “How Sugar Affects the Brain” to answer? (Write them down in spiral.)
- Watch video and create questions that you saw answers for in the video.
- Discuss class questions on video and compare to those on sheet.
- Answer sheet questions during 2nd viewing of video.
What kind of questions are the most helpful when doing research?

Article: “What Eating 40 Teaspoons of Sugar a Day Can Do to You”
- Create questions based on title. (Write in spiral.)
- View That Sugar Film trailer video together
- With partner, while reading article–create questions that help pull out important facts and details.
- Class share: questions and answers

- Read 25+ pages in a chapter book of your choice and log:
- Title
- Pg. ___ to ___
- Two sentences about your reading
- Parent signature
- Watch 30 minutes of television aimed at your age group (ex: a cartoon).
- Write down commercials that are aired and the products being sold.
- What types of food and drinks are being advertised, and how do them make them appealing to kids?
- Also write down any food products that are marketed or consumed in the show itself.
