Please take out:

  • computer (closed for now)
  • spiral notebook
  • agenda, open to last week’s reading

Learning Target: Students will be able to create research questions for driving their learning and to explain why it is important to do so.

Building Research Skills: Questioning

  • What questions would you expect a video titled “How Sugar Affects the Brain” to answer? (Write them down in spiral.)
  • Watch video and create questions that you saw answers for in the video.
  • Discuss class questions on video and compare to those on sheet.
  • Answer sheet questions during 2nd viewing of video.

What kind of questions are the most helpful when doing research?

Article: “What Eating 40 Teaspoons of Sugar a Day Can Do to You”

  • Create questions based on title. (Write in spiral.)
  • View That Sugar Film trailer video together
  • With partner, while reading article–create questions that help pull out important facts and details.
  • Class share: questions and answers

Homework:

  1. Read 25+ pages in a chapter book of your choice and log:
    1. Title
    2. Pg. ___ to ___
    3. Two sentences about your reading
    4. Parent signature
  2. Watch 30 minutes of television aimed at your age group (ex: a cartoon).
    • Write down commercials that are aired and the products being sold.
    • What types of food and drinks are being advertised, and how do them make them appealing to kids?
    • Also write down any food products that are marketed or consumed in the show itself.
