Learning Target: Students will be able to identify and use the different skills required for a successful academic conversation.

Identifying conversation moves:

Critique African-American Journey Discussion prompt choices

  • Which prompt would offer the best chance of leading to a rich conversation that uses support from the class text, other texts, the real world, and personal experiences?

Prepare your conversation ideas (brainstorm claim and supports) on the doc.

Go over Discussion Observation Checklist

Per. 2 (9:05-9:58)

Arrange pairs for discussion

Remember, the discussion sheet is only a guide. Your job is to keep the conversation going (on topic, adding new ideas every time, building towards a new and deeper understanding) using the conversation moves we have learned about.

Listening pair records observations, notes, and suggestions on sheet.

Homework:

  1. Read 25+ pages (2-3 days) in a chapter book of your choice and log:
    1. Title
    2. Pg. ___ to ___
    3. Two sentences about your reading
    4. Parent signature

Per. 3 (9:47-11:14)
