Extended Writing Project – Plan and Organize
- You must start with a strong thesis statement before gathering details.
- Examples:
- When life-changing events occur, some people turn inward (try to rely only on themselves), like Rachel from “Eleven,” while others turn outward (toward the help of others), like Helen Keller and Jackie Robinson, and we can learn from the choices these characters make.
- Some people impact the world with their life-changing events by action, such as Jackie Robinson, but others, like Gary Paulsen and Rachel from “Eleven,” impact the world through reflecting on their life-changing experiences through writing.
- While Rachel from “Eleven,” Helen Keller, and Jackie Robinson all had different strengths, each relied on their strengths in life-changing moments in a way that impacted not only themselves, but others.
- Revisit your Thesis Statement:
- Do you have a strong central idea yet?
- What are you going to try to prove with your details/text evidence?
- Once you know what kind of details you are looking for, go back into the texts to start planning your essay.
Homework:
- Read 25+ pages and log on Biblionasium:
- Book title
- Page #s you read (p. ____ to p. ____)
- Big Thing that Happened (1-2 sentences: Who? What? When? Where?) + 1 question, prediction, inference, connection, visualization, or new word and how you guessed its meaning
- Finish gathering details that help prove your thesis statement.
