Good Morning, Class!

Please come in quietly and take out:

Group 1: Go over Re-reads 1 & 2: My Father is a Simple Man, Acad Voc L6

Group 2: Freedom Walkers Ch. 8: The Children Coming On (open in Classroom)

Open First Read: My Father is a Simple Man on StudySync

  • Share: Vocab sentences, Think response 3
  • SyncTV: View video and discuss:
    • 1:51 – How do the students use text evidence to understand the father and son and their relationship?
    • 2:56 – Students offer their personal reactions to lines in the poem. What are their reactions? What are some lines in the poem that you had personal reactions to? What were those reactions?
    • 5:58 – In the beginning Josh wonders how someone can be both simple and great. By the end of the video, what conclusions do the students reach?
  • Think: ACE 6-8
  • Compare: Read and Annotate Gary Soto’s poem, “Oranges” for similarities and differences
  • Discuss: Compare and contrast the two poems. How are they alike? How are they different? Be sure to look at underlying messages, not just surface comparisons.
  • Extend: Create a video for “My Father is a Simple Man” similar to this one for “Oranges”

Homework:

  1. Read 25+ pages and log on Biblionasium:
    1. Title/author
    2. p. ____ to p. ____
    3. BTH (1-2 sentences: Who? What? When? Where?) + 1 visualization, thick question, use of context clues, or inference
  2. Complete all work on StudySync and Classroom.
  3. Academic Vocabulary Lesson 7 on StudySync (due by Fri. 2/15).

Per. 3 (10:01-10:49) – Speech and Debate
