Per. 1 (8:15-9:05) – Language Arts

Open First Read: My Father is a Simple Man on StudySync

  • Compare: Read and Annotate Gary Soto’s poem, “Oranges” for similarities and differences
  • Discuss: Compare and contrast the two poems. How are they alike? How are they different?

Open Media: My Father is a Simple Man on StudySync

  • Define: View video and read definition
  • Discuss:
    1. Today, many people text rather than make phone calls as they might have done a decade ago. How does taking the sound out of these interpersonal communications affect the messages
    2. In what ways might the sound of language be linked to its message or meaning?
    3. What advantage might audio have over print in presenting this poem? What advantage might print have over audio in its ability to entertain and inform? Explain your answers. 
    4. If you were assigned the task of creating an audio version of My Father is a Simple Man, what would you need to consider?
  • Model: Read and annotate

    • identify places where the Model applies the strategies laid out in the Identification and Application section
  • Discuss:
    1. According to the Model, what are some elements that a reader can use to emphasize details when a text is read aloud? 
    2. According to the Model, how does the poet provide clues for reading this text aloud?
    3. How does the reader in the audio version use his voice to interpret the text and its meaning in lines 15 through 23?
  • Your Turn: Read carefully and complete the questions
  • Write: Review the text and audio to ACE the Skills Focus question

Homework:

  1. Read 25+ pages and log on Biblionasium:

    3. BTH (1-2 sentences: Who? What? When? Where?) + 1 visualization, thick question, use of context clues, or inference
  2. Complete all work on StudySync and Classroom.
  3. Academic Vocabulary Lesson 7 on StudySync (due by Fri.).
