Weds.-Thurs. 11/6-11/7/19 – Math

Welcome to Math!

  1. Please come in quietly, sit, and take out: agenda, math spiral, pencil, Chromebook
  2. Write Homework in Agenda: 1) Study IM 5.12 Lesson Summary and complete IM 5.12 PP (1-4/5)2) Do Mid-Unit 5 Assessment.
  3. On Classroom, open 5.11.4 Calculating Quotients and click Formative link. You will have 5 minutes to solve both problems. Show your steps/thinking.
  4. Open IM 5.12 Student Task Statements on Classroom
  5. In math spiral, write today’s date (in a box) and lesson title:

IM 5.12: Dividing Decimals by Whole Numbers

Let’s divide decimals by whole numbers.

  • Activity 12.2: Using Diagrams to Represent Division
  • Activity 12.3: Dividends and Divisors
  • Lesson 12 Synthesis: In this lesson, we saw that we can divide a decimal by a whole number the same way we divide two whole numbers. We used base-ten diagrams to show how this is true.
    • How do we use base-ten diagrams to show division of a decimal by a whole number, for example, 0.8 ÷ 5?
    • What do we do with remainders? For example, in the case of 0.8 ÷ 5, how do we deal with the remainder of 3 tenths?
    • How do we know what the quotient of 0.8 ÷ 5 is?

We also thought about division of decimals a different way—by multiplying both the dividend and divisor by the same power of 10, which gives us an equivalent division expression.

    • What are some division expressions that are equivalent to 30 ÷ 0.1?
    • What happens to the value of a quotient when both the divisor and the dividend are multiplied by the same power of 10?

Learning Target copy

Learning Target: Students will be able to divide a decimal by a whole number, explain the division of a decimal by a whole number in terms of equal-sized groups, and know how multiplying both the dividend and the divisor by the same factor affects the quotient.
