It was pointed out to me on our Shelfari page that the LA Times Festival of Books is speedily drawing near.  Many students are already excited about going.  Have a look around the website and see which authors are going to be there on which days, and we can talk about arranging rides when I get back after Spring Break.

Also, we have a book shop over in the left sidebar under “Web Resources” that can give you some ideas for great reads!  Have a look–anything you buy there will help our class receive credits with Amazon.com!

So, tell me:

  • What books have you been excited about lately?
  • How are your group books going?
  • Have you found any powerful themes or lessons about life in the stories you’ve been reading?
  • What about electronic reading devices like the Kindle?  Do you use them or do you prefer holding the actual book in your hand?

Let’s Go Visit Mummies!

Okay, Team Princeton is all set up to visit the Mummies of the World Exhibit at the California Science Center on Wednesday, November 17th!

Here is all kinds of information for the Big Day:

Mummies of the World Exhibit

Lunch Break

Ecosystems Exhibit

This will be the perfect informational field trip to accompany our unit on Egypt in social studies, and the science unit on ecosystems!

Please go to the museum/exhibit websites and look around, then write in and say what you are most looking forward to seeing and learning about.

Art in the News

The Kalamazoo Institute of Art will be holding an essay-writing contest. The contestants must write a 200 word essay that goes with a picture by Dorothea Lange named “Migrate Mother, Nimpomo, California.” Each essay must be at least 200 words, completed by October 29, and and turned into the museum’s website. Anyone in sixth grade and higher can join this contest, and be able to win 100 dollars in cash and have their essay published on the computer. I chose to do this current event because I think it is nice of the museum to give money to someone for writing a report. I love writing, and even though I am not planning on joining this contest, I think it would be fun to do it. I like the thought of only writing a little 200 word- essay, and winning 100 dollars! In this picture, it shows a mother and her children crying over something that I think is very hurtful, and I do notice that there is not a picture of the dad in this picture. Overall, I think this is a great contest and I hope many people join it, in order to win some money.  Good luck to you all!

Parents, Students, and Classes Should Visit Our Blog!!!

For the September 2010 Student Blogging Challenge, our first assignment is to create a post explaining why you should read our blog, so here it is!

Do you enjoy really fun stories, videos, games, and educational stuff?  If so, then welcome to Miss Nichols’ Class Communicates!  This is a great place for parents, students, and other classes to come visit because:

  • Parents can find out what we are doing in class and see the work of their children, for example these Han Dynasty Skits. (All examples are from the 2009-10 school year, as we have barely begun for 2010-11.)
  • Classes can share their ideas and thinking with us, like on current events features or common curriculum.

This blog will highlight our different ways of learning and showing what we know.  As of right now, we are training to become excellent blog commenters, but soon we will grow into being blog post creators, and later have our own individual student blogs!  Please watch our growth and learning, and remember to leave lots of  comments for us so we know you’re reading!
