Thursday 3/26/20 – Language Arts

Language Arts – Per. 1-2 (do in this order):

1. Academic Vocab

Learning Target: Students will be able to acquire and use academic words and phrases.

On StudySync, open Academic Vocab Lesson 8

2. Argumentative Essay – EWP assignments are to be done IN ORDER. Go back to previous blog posts, StudySync, and Classroom assignments for prior directions.

Learning Target copyLearning Target: Students will be able to edit and proofread text to finalize information, style, and organization, and to eliminate errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

For this next step, you need to have received two peer reviews on your EWP: Draft and EWP: Revise assignments in StudySync. If you have not, go back to previous lessons.

On StudySync, open EWP: Edit, Proofread, and Publish assignment. You will spend two days on this assignment.

  • Follow directions in assignment. Read each part (including studying links) carefully and fully finish each step before moving onto the next one. Take your time. Your essay should look different from your original draft by the time you have finished all three rounds of revisions and the improvements should be noticeable.
  • Turn in assignment when finished.
  • Give two peer reviews following the guidance in the assignment.

3. Late SS Assignments (will be graded in this order and disappear once graded):

On Classroom, find the assignment under Distance Learning called Intro to Flipgrid. Click the link and sign in with Google. View my video in Flipgrid for more instructions. (We’re just testing this out for now.)

On StudySync, open Nimona assignment

  • Follow directions in assignment. You can do whichever parts you want.
  • Submit assignment when finished.

Friday 3/20/20 – Language Arts

I miss being able to see everyone’s faces. I’ve posted a video activity on ClassDojo where you can show me what you’ve been reading this week and tell me about the book. (Let me know if you need the code to get in.)

Goals for the week (overview):

  • Finish and turn in Hero Essay Draft
  • Finish late work on StudySync
  • Read 30+ pages in a book of your choice and log on Biblionasium
  • Bonus items (for when you are caught up on everything else):
    • Analyze poems related to Heroes unit (on StudySync)
    • Create Personal Hero Poem to share with class! (Directions at bottom of this post.)

Directions (do in this order):

1. Argumentative Essay

Learning Target copyLearning Target: Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of audience, purpose, and style and determine the audience, purpose for writing, and appropriate style for an argumentative essay.

On StudySync, open Audience, Purpose, and Style blast

  • Follow directions in assignment.
  • Turn in assignment when finished.

Learning Target copyLearning Target: Students will be able to draft an argumentative essay that includes a claim, logical organization, reasons and relevant evidence, introduction and conclusion, body paragraphs and transitions in response to a prompt.

On Classroom, open EWP: Draft doc

  • Highlight the entire draft and set to size 12 Times (or Times New Roman) font, double-spaced. Add an extra blank line between paragraphs, as you cannot indent in StudySync.
  • Use all available tools (Tools –> Spelling and Grammar, Language Tools or Grammarly Chrome add ons) to find and correct any errors or mistakes in your writing.
  • Read aloud your entire draft and fix any other mistakes or errors (Bonus! Use WeVideo to record your reading: 1) Select Drive before you click Finish the video. 2) Find the file in Drive and set sharing permissions to “anyone with the link can view.” 3) Add the Drive video file to the assignment in Classroom to get Extra Credit.)

On StudySync, open EWP: Draft assignment

  • Copy/paste each paragraph from your Google doc into the StudySync Draft assignment. (Select the text without highlighting the entire box to avoid bringing table cells over.)
  • Open the Grammar PDF at the top of the page and review the information on Style and Tone.
  • Read your essay one more time, considering the 7 bullet points at the bottom of the prompt box. Make any changes you want to strengthen your essay.
  • Submit assignment (on both Classroom and StudySync).
  • Do 2 peer reviews on StudySync. (Remember: a peer reviewer’s comments are most useful when they are clear, constructive, and presented with a positive attitude!)
