READING

Reading includes building vocabulary and fluency skills, working with non-fiction or informational materials, and thinking about and interpreting literature (fiction). Many students have developed great repertoires of fiction strategies from their experiences working with stories in the primary grades, but are less familiar with reading and understanding non-fiction texts. We will definitely work on that.

WRITING

Writing consists of building up strategies used during the writing process, such as organizing one’s thoughts and rereading and revising. These strategies are applied to many different genres of writing throughout the year, like narrative, research reports, and persuasive essays.

LANGUAGE CONVENTIONS

Language conventions are like the foundation of a house or building. You can’t communicate or express yourself well unless you have mastery over spelling, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization.

LISTENING AND SPEAKING

Obviously listening and speaking are basic skills needed in any language. The better your skills in these two areas, the more opportunities become available to you in life!

Because there are so many language arts standards for us to work on over the course of the year, I have broken them down into eight units, which you can find on the right sidebar under “Pages”. To find out more about what we are currently doing, find LANGUAGE ARTS, then click on that time of year.
